About Asbestosis

Asbestosis is a serious, chronic lung condition caused by inhaling asbestos fibers, leading to scarring and breathing difficulties. Managing its symptoms often requires ongoing medication and therapies. TheDrugClub is dedicated to making these essential treatments more affordable for individuals and families, ensuring access to the care you need without financial strain.

Asbestosis is a long-term, progressive lung disease resulting from the inhalation of microscopic asbestos fibers. These durable fibers, once lodged in the lungs, cause irritation and scarring of the lung tissue, a process known as fibrosis. This scarring makes the lungs stiff and less elastic, severely impairing their ability to take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. Symptoms typically develop slowly, often 10 to 40 years after initial exposure, and include shortness of breath (especially during exertion), a persistent dry cough, chest pain or tightness, and in advanced cases, clubbing of the fingers and toes.

The condition is diagnosed through a combination of a detailed occupational and medical history, physical examination, chest X-rays, high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scans, and lung function tests. Unfortunately, there is no cure for asbestosis, as the lung damage is irreversible. Treatment focuses primarily on managing symptoms, improving quality of life, and preventing complications.

Common treatments and medications include oxygen therapy to ease breathing difficulties, especially as the disease progresses. Bronchodilators, such as albuterol or ipratropium, may be prescribed to help open airways and relieve shortness of breath.
