About Familial Amyloid Cardiomyopathy
Familial amyloid cardiomyopathy is a serious genetic condition where abnormal proteins build up in the heart, leading to stiffness and impaired function. Managing this progressive disease often requires specific, sometimes costly, medications. TheDrugClub helps individuals and families afford these vital prescriptions, ensuring access to necessary care without financial strain.
Familial amyloid cardiomyopathy (FAC), also known as hereditary transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTRv-CM), is a rare but severe genetic disorder. It occurs when a mutated transthyretin (TTR) protein, produced mainly by the liver, misfolds and deposits as amyloid fibrils in the heart muscle. Over time, these amyloid deposits cause the heart walls to thicken and stiffen, making it difficult for the heart to pump blood effectively. This can lead to heart failure.
Symptoms often progress slowly and can include shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling in the legs and ankles, irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias), and sometimes nerve problems. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of genetic testing to identify the specific TTR mutation, cardiac imaging such as echocardiograms or cardiac MRI, and sometimes a heart biopsy to confirm amyloid deposits. Early diagnosis is crucial for slowing the disease's progression.
Treatment for familial amyloid cardiomyopathy focuses on managing symptoms and slowing the accumulation of amyloid deposits. Medications often include diuretics to reduce fluid buildup, beta-blockers or calcium channel blockers to control heart rate and rhythm, and anti-arrhythmic drugs. More specialized and often high-cost treatments are available to directly target the disease process. These include TTR stabilizers like tafamidis (Vyndaqel), which prevents TTR protein from misfolding, and RNA interference therapies such as patisiran (Onpattro) or inotersen (Tegsedi), which reduce the production of TTR protein. In advanced cases, pacemakers, defibrillators, or even a heart transplant may be considered.
The cost of these life-saving medications can be a significant burden for patients and their families. That's where TheDrugClub can make a real difference.
