About Gaucher Disease Type 1

Gaucher disease type 1 is a rare genetic disorder affecting various organs, often requiring lifelong, specialized, and costly treatments. Managing this condition involves regular medication, which can become a significant financial burden. TheDrugClub offers a simple, affordable membership solution to help patients and families access necessary prescriptions at a lower cost, providing much-needed relief.

Gaucher disease type 1 is the most common form of a rare, inherited metabolic disorder. It occurs when the body doesn't produce enough of an enzyme called glucocerebrosidase. This enzyme is responsible for breaking down a fatty substance called glucocerebroside. Without enough of this enzyme, glucocerebroside builds up in certain cells, particularly in the spleen, liver, bones, and bone marrow. This accumulation can lead to a range of symptoms and health issues.

Patients with Gaucher disease type 1 may experience an enlarged spleen and liver, bone pain, bone crises, fractures, fatigue, easy bruising, and low blood counts (anemia and thrombocytopenia). While it affects various parts of the body, Type 1 typically does not involve the brain or nervous system, distinguishing it from other types of Gaucher disease. Diagnosis usually involves a blood test to measure the activity of the glucocerebrosidase enzyme.

Managing Gaucher disease type 1 often requires ongoing medical intervention. The primary treatments fall into two main categories: Enzyme Replacement Therapy (ERT) and Substrate Reduction Therapy (SRT).

  • Enzyme Replacement Therapy (ERT): This involves intravenous infusions of a synthetic enzyme that replaces the missing natural enzyme. Medications like Imiglucerase (Cerezyme), Velaglucerase alfa (VPRIV), and Taliglucerase alfa (Elelyso) are administered regularly, often every two weeks. ERT is highly effective but can be exceptionally expensive, with annual costs reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  • Substrate Reduction Therapy (SRT): These are oral medications that work by reducing the amount of glucocerebroside the body produces. Examples include Miglustat (Zavesca) and Eliglustat (Cerdelga). SRT offers the convenience of oral administration but also comes with a
