About HNPP
Hereditary Neuropathy with Liability to Pressure Palsies (HNPP) is a genetic condition causing recurrent episodes of numbness, tingling, and weakness from minor nerve pressure. While there's no cure, managing symptoms and preventing episodes is key. TheDrugClub understands the financial burden of ongoing health needs and offers a straightforward way for members to save on necessary prescriptions, making care more accessible.
Hereditary Neuropathy with Liability to Pressure Palsies, or HNPP, is a relatively rare inherited neurological disorder that affects the peripheral nerves. It's characterized by an increased susceptibility to nerve damage from minor pressure, stretching, or repetitive movements. This damage often manifests as temporary episodes of numbness, tingling, weakness, or even paralysis in the affected limb or body part. These "pressure palsies" can last anywhere from minutes to months, though full recovery is typical. The underlying cause is a genetic mutation on chromosome 17 that leads to a deficiency of a protein called PMP22, crucial for maintaining the myelin sheath – the protective covering around nerve fibers.
Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, detailed medical history, nerve conduction studies, electromyography (EMG), and often genetic testing to confirm the PMP22 gene mutation. While HNPP is not life-threatening, it can significantly impact quality of life, making everyday activities challenging.
Currently, there is no specific cure for HNPP, so treatment focuses on managing symptoms, preventing nerve damage, and improving function. The primary approach is to avoid activities that put pressure on nerves. This might include using ergonomic tools, avoiding prolonged sitting or standing in certain positions, and wearing protective padding. Physical and occupational therapy are often recommended to maintain muscle strength, improve coordination, and learn adaptive strategies. For pain relief, over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen may be used. In some cases, if neuropathic pain is persistent, a doctor might prescribe medications such as gabapentin or pregabalin, or other nerve pain medications. Orthotic devices, splints, or braces can also provide support and help prevent nerve compression.
Managing a chronic condition like HNPP often means ongoing medication needs and regular doctor visits. The costs associated with prescriptions can add up, creating an additional source of stress. This is where TheDrugClub steps in to help. With a Drug Club membership, our members gain access to significant discounts on thousands of prescription medications, including those that might be prescribed for HNPP symptom management.
