About Lynch Syndrome Management

Lynch Syndrome, also known as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), is a genetic disorder that dramatically increases an individual's lifetime risk of developing certain cancers. It's caused by inherited mutations in genes responsible for DNA mismatch repair (MMR), such as MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, and PMS2. While not a cancer itself, Lynch Syndrome predisposes individuals to cancers of the colon, rectum, endometrium, ovaries, stomach, small intestine, urinary tract, and others. Early detection and proactive management are crucial for individuals diagnosed with this condition.

Managing Lynch Syndrome primarily focuses on early cancer detection and prevention. This often involves a rigorous surveillance schedule, including frequent colonoscopies to detect and remove polyps before they become cancerous, regular gynecological exams for women, and sometimes upper endoscopies. For individuals at very high risk, prophylactic surgeries like a total colectomy or hysterectomy/oophorectomy may be considered to prevent cancer development.

Should cancer develop, common treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. A particularly important development for Lynch Syndrome-associated cancers is immunotherapy, especially for tumors identified as MMR-deficient. Drugs like pembrolizumab or nivolumab can be highly effective in these cases. Additionally, studies have shown that daily low-dose aspirin may help reduce the risk of colorectal cancer in individuals with Lynch Syndrome, making it a common prescription for prevention.

These treatments and preventive medications, especially specialized cancer drugs or even long-term aspirin regimens, can become a significant financial burden. This is where TheDrugClub steps in to help. With a Drug Club membership for individuals or $39.
