About Oral Leukoplakia (Homogeneous)

What is Homogeneous Oral Leukoplakia?

Oral leukoplakia is a term used to describe a white patch or plaque on the mucous membranes of the mouth that cannot be characterized as any other diagnosable lesion. The 'homogeneous' type is typically uniform in color, flat, thin, and often has a smooth or finely wrinkled surface. It's usually painless, which can make it easy to overlook, but it's important to understand its significance. These lesions are considered potentially malignant disorders, meaning they have the potential to transform into oral cancer over time.

While the exact cause is often unknown, several risk factors are strongly associated with its development, including tobacco use (smoking, chewing), heavy alcohol consumption, and chronic irritation from sources like ill-fitting dentures. It can appear on various surfaces of the mouth, such as the inside of the cheeks, the tongue, or the floor of the mouth.
