About Post-Polio Syndrome
Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) is a neurological condition that can emerge decades after an initial polio infection, causing new or worsening muscle weakness, fatigue, and pain. Managing these symptoms often requires ongoing medication and therapy. TheDrugClub helps make these essential treatments more affordable, ensuring you can access the care you need without financial strain.
For survivors of polio, the original battle against the virus may have ended decades ago, but for many, a new challenge can emerge later in life: Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS). This condition is not a re-emergence of the polio virus, but rather a late-onset neurological disorder characterized by a constellation of new or worsened symptoms. It's believed that the original polio infection damaged motor neurons, and over time, the remaining overstressed neurons begin to fail, leading to progressive muscle weakness, atrophy, overwhelming fatigue, and chronic pain.
Common symptoms of PPS include new or increased muscle weakness in previously affected or unaffected muscles, generalized fatigue that isn't relieved by rest, muscle and joint pain, sleep disturbances, and sometimes breathing or swallowing difficulties. These symptoms can significantly impact daily life, making once-easy tasks challenging and requiring adjustments to lifestyle and daily routines.
Currently, there is no cure for Post-Polio Syndrome. Treatment focuses primarily on managing symptoms to improve quality of life and maintain function. This often involves a multi-faceted approach, including physical therapy to maintain muscle strength and flexibility, occupational therapy to adapt daily activities, and assistive devices. Medication plays a crucial role in symptom management. Pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, and sometimes specific medications to combat fatigue or neuropathic pain are commonly prescribed. These ongoing prescription costs can quickly add up, creating a significant financial burden for individuals and families.
