About PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome
PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome (PHTS), also known as Cowden syndrome or Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome, is a rare inherited disorder. It's caused by a mutation in the *PTEN* gene, a critical tumor suppressor gene. When this gene isn't working correctly, it leads to the uncontrolled growth of cells, resulting in the formation of non-cancerous growths called hamartomas in various parts of the body.
Individuals with PHTS can develop hamartomas in organs like the skin, mucous membranes, breasts, thyroid, gastrointestinal tract, and brain. While these growths are typically benign, the most significant concern with PHTS is the elevated lifetime risk of developing certain cancers, including breast, thyroid, endometrial, kidney, and colorectal cancers. This makes early detection and consistent monitoring incredibly important for managing the condition.
