About PV JAK2 V617F
Polycythemia Vera (PV) is a type of myeloproliferative neoplasm, a group of conditions where the bone marrow produces too many blood cells. Specifically, with PV, the bone marrow primarily makes an excess of red blood cells, but it can also produce too many white blood cells and platelets. This overproduction thickens the blood, increasing the risk of serious complications like blood clots, heart attack, and stroke.
A significant majority of PV cases (around 95%) are linked to a specific genetic mutation known as JAK2 V617F. This mutation causes the JAK2 gene to be overactive, leading to uncontrolled blood cell growth. While PV is a chronic condition that typically progresses slowly, understanding its genetic basis helps guide diagnosis and treatment. Symptoms can include fatigue, itching (especially after a warm bath), headaches, dizziness, and an enlarged spleen.
