About Pyogenic Granuloma
Pyogenic granuloma is a common, benign skin growth that often appears as a red, shiny bump and bleeds easily. While harmless, it can be bothersome and requires treatment. The good news? TheDrugClub helps make the necessary medications and post-treatment prescriptions more affordable, ensuring you can focus on healing, not high costs.
What is Pyogenic Granuloma?
Despite its somewhat alarming name, a pyogenic granuloma is a common, non-cancerous (benign) skin growth. It's actually a type of vascular lesion, meaning it's packed with tiny blood vessels. This is why these growths are typically bright red, pink, or purplish, and tend to bleed very easily, often at the slightest touch. They can appear rapidly, sometimes after a minor injury, and are frequently found on the head, neck, fingers, lips, and even inside the mouth or on the gums. While the name suggests pus (pyogenic), it's a misnomer; these growths are not infections but rather an overgrowth of capillaries.
Pyogenic granulomas can affect people of all ages but are particularly common in children, pregnant women (often called a 'pregnancy tumor' in this context), and individuals on certain medications. Although generally harmless, their tendency to bleed and sometimes become painful or infected means most people seek removal.
Common Treatments and Medications
The primary treatment for pyogenic granuloma involves removing the growth. The method chosen often depends on the size, location, and individual circumstances. Common removal techniques include:
- Surgical Excision: The lesion is cut out, and the wound is stitched closed. This method helps ensure complete removal and reduces recurrence.
- Curettage and Cauterization: The growth is scraped off with a specialized tool (curette), and the base is then burned (cauterized) to stop bleeding and destroy any remaining tissue.
- Laser Therapy: A laser is used to destroy the blood vessels feeding the growth.
- Cryotherapy: Freezing the lesion with liquid nitrogen, often used for smaller growths.
While removal is the main course of action, medications can play a role in treatment or post-procedure care. For instance, small lesions might sometimes be treated with topical medications like silver nitrate to stop bleeding or dry out the growth, or even beta-blocker gels like timolol. After removal, your doctor might prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection, pain relievers for discomfort,
