About Severe ITP (<20K)
Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder where your body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys its own platelets. Platelets are tiny blood cells crucial for clotting, and without enough of them, you're at risk of bleeding. When your platelet count drops below 20,000 per microliter of blood, it's considered severe ITP, often referred to as "severe ITP 20k." This critically low count dramatically increases the risk of spontaneous bleeding, easy bruising, nosebleeds, gum bleeding, and even more severe internal hemorrhages.
Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to confirm low platelet counts and rule out other causes. Managing severe ITP 20k often requires immediate and ongoing medical intervention. Common treatments aim to increase platelet counts and reduce immune system activity. First-line therapies often include corticosteroids like prednisone, which can quickly suppress the immune response. If corticosteroids aren't effective or suitable long-term, other options include intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) or anti-RhD immunoglobulin. For persistent or chronic severe ITP, doctors may prescribe
