About Vesicoureteral Reflux (Grade III-V)

Understanding Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR) Grade III-V

Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR) is a condition where urine in the bladder flows backward into the ureters and often up to the kidneys. While some children outgrow milder forms, VUR Grade III-V is considered severe and can pose significant risks to kidney health.

What does Grade III-V mean? VUR is graded on a scale of I to V based on how far up the urinary tract the urine travels and how much the ureter is dilated. Grade III means the urine refluxes into the kidney’s collecting system with mild dilation of the ureter and renal pelvis. Grade IV involves moderate dilation and twisting of the ureter. Grade V is the most severe, with significant dilation and tortuosity of the ureter and renal pelvis, often affecting the kidney's ability to concentrate urine. This backward flow can lead to repeated urinary tract infections (UTIs) and, if left untreated, can cause kidney scarring, high blood pressure, and even kidney failure.

Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests like a voiding cystourethrogram (
