About Acanthamoeba Keratitis

Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a serious and potentially blinding infection of the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped front surface of your eye. It's caused by a microscopic, free-living amoeba (a single-celled organism) called *Acanthamoeba*, commonly found in soil, dust, fresh water, and even tap water. While rare, AK often strikes contact lens wearers, especially those who don't follow proper lens hygiene, such as cleaning lenses with tap water, showering or swimming with lenses in, or extending wear beyond recommended periods. Symptoms can include severe eye pain, redness, blurred vision, light sensitivity, and a feeling like something is in your eye. Because its symptoms can mimic other eye infections, diagnosis can be challenging and often delayed, requiring specialized testing.

Treating Acanthamoeba keratitis typically involves aggressive, long-term use of anti-amoebic eye drops. Medications often include biguanides like polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) or chlorhexidine, and sometimes diamidines such as propamidine isethionate. These treatments can last for several weeks to many months, and in some cases, a corneal transplant may be necessary if the infection is severe or doesn't respond to medication. The specialized nature and extended duration of these treatments mean the cost of necessary prescriptions can quickly become a significant financial burden, adding stress to an already difficult health situation.
