About Achalasia

Achalasia is a rare swallowing disorder where the esophagus struggles to move food to the stomach. This chronic condition can significantly impact quality of life, often requiring ongoing medical management. TheDrugClub helps ease the financial burden of necessary prescriptions, ensuring members can access vital treatments without added stress.

What is Achalasia?

Achalasia is a rare motility disorder affecting the esophagus, the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. Specifically, it involves the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus. In achalasia, the LES fails to relax properly during swallowing, and the nerve cells in the esophagus itself become damaged, preventing the coordinated muscle contractions (peristalsis) needed to push food down. This leads to food and liquids backing up in the esophagus, causing symptoms like difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), regurgitation, chest pain, heartburn, and weight loss. While its exact cause isn't fully understood, it's believed to be an autoimmune or neurodegenerative condition.
