About Acute Pericarditis (Idiopathic)
Acute Pericarditis Idiopathic: What You Need to Know
Acute pericarditis is the sudden inflammation of the pericardium, the thin, two-layered sac that surrounds your heart. This sac contains a small amount of fluid and helps protect the heart, keeping it in place and preventing over-expansion. When this sac becomes inflamed, it can lead to uncomfortable and sometimes severe symptoms.
The term "idiopathic" means that the exact cause of the inflammation is unknown. In fact, idiopathic acute pericarditis is the most common form of the condition. While the underlying trigger might not be identified, it's often suspected to be viral in nature, even if a specific virus isn't found.
Common symptoms include a sharp, stabbing chest pain that may worsen when you take a deep breath, lie down, or cough, and often improves when you lean forward. Other signs can include fever, fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations. Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam, electrocardiogram (ECG), blood tests to check for inflammation, and sometimes an echocardiogram to visualize the heart and pericardium. Most cases are self-limiting, meaning they resolve on their own, but some individuals may experience recurrent episodes.
