About Adult-Onset RLRP
What is Adult Onset Recurrent Laryngeal Respiratory Papillomatosis (AORLRP)?
Adult Onset Recurrent Laryngeal Respiratory Papillomatosis (AORLRP) is a rare, chronic condition affecting the respiratory tract, most commonly the larynx (voice box). It's caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), typically types 6 and 11. These benign (non-cancerous) growths, called papillomas, can form in various parts of the airway, including the vocal cords, trachea, and even the lungs.
The primary symptoms of AORLRP often include persistent hoarseness or voice changes, difficulty breathing (dyspnea), chronic cough, and frequent throat clearing. Because the papillomas tend to recur even after removal, AORLRP requires ongoing management and can significantly impact a person's voice quality, breathing, and overall quality of life.
