Anemia is a condition where your blood lacks healthy red blood cells, leading to symptoms like fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath. When it occurs alongside a connective tissue disease (CTD), such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Sjogren's syndrome, or scleroderma, it's often referred to as anemia of connective tissue disease, or more broadly, anemia of chronic disease.
This type of anemia isn't usually due to iron deficiency alone. Instead, the persistent inflammation characteristic of CTDs interferes with the body's ability to use iron effectively and produce new red blood cells. Inflammatory cytokines can suppress erythropoiesis (red blood cell production) in the bone marrow and shorten the lifespan of existing red blood cells. Even if you have sufficient iron stores, your body can't access them properly, a phenomenon sometimes called "functional iron deficiency."
