About Bladder Cancer Surveillance (High Risk)
For many, a diagnosis of bladder cancer doesn't end with initial treatment. For those categorized as “high risk” for recurrence, a critical phase of long-term monitoring, known as surveillance, begins. This isn't a new diagnosis, but rather a proactive strategy to detect any potential return of the cancer as early as possible, when it's most treatable.
What is High-Risk Bladder Cancer Surveillance?
"Bladder cancer surveillance high risk" applies to individuals who have been treated for bladder cancer but have specific characteristics that increase their likelihood of the cancer coming back. These factors can include the initial stage or grade of the cancer, its multi-focal nature, or a history of previous recurrences. Surveillance typically involves a regular schedule of tests, such as cystoscopy (a procedure to look inside the bladder), urine cytology (checking urine for cancer cells), and sometimes imaging scans. The goal is to catch any new growth or recurrence early, before it progresses.
Common Treatments and Medications in Surveillance
While surveillance itself is monitoring, it often involves a preventative or adjunctive treatment strategy, especially for high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. A common treatment is intravesical therapy, where medications are instilled directly into the bladder. These can include:
- BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin): An immunotherapy agent used to stimulate the body's immune response against cancer cells in the bladder.
- Chemotherapy agents: Such as Mitomycin C or Gemcitabine, which are also instilled into the bladder to kill remaining cancer cells or prevent recurrence.
These treatments are often administered over several weeks or months and may be repeated periodically. Managing the side effects of these therapies or other supportive medications can also be part of the ongoing care plan.
