Body Lice Pediculosis Corporis Medications, Costs & Savings
Pharmacist insight
Topical medications for skin conditions work best when applied to clean, slightly damp skin. For conditions like eczema or psoriasis, consistency is key — applying medication twice daily as directed produces significantly better outcomes than sporadic use. Generic topical steroids are equally effective at much lower cost.

About Body Lice Pediculosis Corporis
Understanding Body Lice: More Than Just an Itch
Body lice are small, wingless insects, distinct from head or pubic lice, that primarily infest clothing and bedding rather than directly on the body. They move onto the skin several times a day to feed on blood, causing intense itching, particularly at night. This persistent scratching can lead to skin irritation, rashes, and even secondary bacterial infections. In chronic cases, the skin may become thickened and discolored, a condition sometimes referred to as "vagabond's disease."
These parasites are typically spread through close personal contact or by sharing infested clothing, towels, bedding, or even furniture. They thrive in environments where hygiene is challenging, making them common in overcrowded living conditions or among individuals who may not have regular access to laundry facilities.
Common Treatments and Medications
Treating body lice primarily involves improving personal hygiene and thoroughly cleaning infested items. All clothing, bedding, and towels should be washed in hot water (at least 130°F or 54°C) and then dried on a hot cycle. Items that cannot be washed can be dry-cleaned or sealed in a plastic bag for two weeks to starve the lice.
In addition to environmental measures, medicated lotions or shampoos, known as pediculicides, may be prescribed. Common medications include:
- Permethrin: Often available as a cream or lotion, applied to the skin.
- Malathion: A stronger topical lotion, typically used when other treatments are ineffective.
- Ivermectin: Can be prescribed as an oral medication or a topical lotion, particularly for more severe or resistant infestations.
For the intense itching, over-the-counter antihistamines can provide relief. If secondary bacterial infections develop from scratching, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics.
