About Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection

Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) is a serious, yet preventable, infection that can occur in patients with a central venous catheter. These infections require prompt and often costly treatment, including potent antibiotics. TheDrugClub helps members significantly reduce the financial burden of these essential medications, ensuring access to the care you need without added stress.

When a patient needs critical medical care, a central venous catheter – often called a central line – is a vital tool. It allows healthcare providers to deliver medications, fluids, and nutrition, or monitor vital signs directly into a large vein. What is CLABSI?

CLABSI is a serious infection that occurs when germs enter the bloodstream through a central line. These infections can lead to severe complications, including sepsis, longer hospital stays, and even death. Bacteria or fungi can enter the bloodstream through the insertion site on the skin or through the hubs and ports of the catheter if not handled with strict sterile techniques. Symptoms often include fever, chills, and redness or tenderness around the catheter site, though sometimes the infection can be present without obvious local signs.

Preventing CLABSI involves meticulous hand hygiene, proper skin preparation before insertion, using sterile barriers during insertion, and careful maintenance of the line. Despite best efforts, infections can still happen, especially in immunocompromised patients or those with lines in place for extended periods.

Treating CLABSI: Medications and Care

Once a CLABSI is suspected or confirmed, prompt treatment is critical. This typically involves removing the central line, if medically feasible, and administering antibiotics. Initially, doctors may prescribe broad-spectrum antibiotics, meaning they target a wide range of bacteria, while awaiting culture results to identify the specific pathogen causing the infection. Once identified, the antibiotic regimen may be narrowed to a more targeted drug, such as vancomycin, daptomycin, or certain cephalosporins, depending on the type of bacteria and its resistance profile. Treatment courses can be lengthy, sometimes weeks, to ensure the
