Corneal ulcer herpes zoster is a painful and potentially sight-threatening condition caused by the varicella-zoster virus – the same virus responsible for chickenpox and shingles. When this virus reactivates later in life, it can cause shingles. If the reactivation affects the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve, it can lead to herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO), with the potential for serious eye complications like a corneal ulcer.
An ulcer forms when the virus causes an open sore on the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped front surface of your eye. This can lead to significant eye pain, redness, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, and a feeling like something is in your eye. Often, these eye symptoms are accompanied by a distinctive rash on the forehead, scalp, and around the eye, usually on one side of the face. Left untreated, a corneal ulcer can lead to scarring, permanent vision loss, or even perforation of the cornea.
