Crab Lice Pediculosis Pubis Medications, Costs & Savings

Pharmacist insight

Topical medications for skin conditions work best when applied to clean, slightly damp skin. For conditions like eczema or psoriasis, consistency is key — applying medication twice daily as directed produces significantly better outcomes than sporadic use. Generic topical steroids are equally effective at much lower cost.

About Crab Lice Pediculosis Pubis

Pediculosis pubis, commonly known as crab lice, is a contagious condition caused by tiny insects that primarily infest pubic hair. While often a source of discomfort and embarrassment, it's highly treatable. TheDrugClub helps members afford the necessary medications, ensuring you can get the relief you need without worrying about high prescription costs.

Pediculosis pubis, more commonly known as pubic lice or "crabs," is an infestation of the pubic hair and surrounding skin by the crab louse (*Phthirus pubis*). These tiny, parasitic insects are typically found clinging to coarse body hair, most often in the pubic region, but can also infest hair on the thighs, armpits, beard, chest, and even eyelashes or eyebrows in some cases. The most common symptom of pediculosis pubis is intense itching in the affected areas, especially at night. You might also notice small, bluish spots on the skin (due to bites), or even spot the lice themselves, which are grayish-white and about the size of a pinhead, or their tiny white eggs (nits) attached to the hair shaft.

  • Prescription Medications: For persistent cases or when OTC options aren't effective, a doctor may prescribe stronger treatments. These can include permethrin 5% cream, malathion lotion, or oral ivermectin. It's crucial to follow your healthcare provider's instructions carefully for these medications.

Beyond treating the body, it's vital to wash all clothing, bedding, and towels in hot water (at least 1
