About Dravet Syndrome (Pediatric)
Dravet Syndrome is a rare, severe form of epilepsy that begins in infancy, characterized by frequent, prolonged seizures and developmental challenges. Managing this lifelong condition often requires multiple, expensive medications. TheDrugClub helps families afford these vital treatments, offering significant savings on prescriptions to ease the financial burden.
Dravet Syndrome is a severe and rare form of epilepsy that typically emerges during the first year of life. It is often caused by a mutation in the SCN1A gene, which affects the function of sodium channels in the brain. Children with Dravet Syndrome experience prolonged and frequent seizures, often triggered by fever, hot temperatures, excitement, or even bright lights. Beyond seizures, the condition can lead to a range of developmental delays, cognitive impairment, movement and balance issues (ataxia), sleep disturbances, and behavioral problems, requiring ongoing specialized care.
There is currently no cure for Dravet Syndrome, so treatment focuses on managing seizures and addressing associated developmental challenges. This often involves a multi-faceted approach. Common medications include specific anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) like Stiripentol, Clobazam, Fenfluramine (Fintepla), and Cannabidiol (Epidiolex). It's crucial to note that some common AEDs can worsen seizures in Dravet patients, making careful selection by a neurologist essential. Beyond daily medications, emergency seizure rescue medications, such as rectal diazepam or nasal midazolam, are vital for prolonged seizures. Non-pharmacological treatments like the ketogenic diet or vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) may also be considered for some individuals. Additionally, physical, occupational, and speech therapies are often necessary to support developmental progress.
Managing Dravet Syndrome is not only emotionally challenging but can also be financially demanding due to the high cost of specialized medications and ongoing therapies. Families often face the burden of multiple prescriptions, many of which are expensive and required long-term. This is where TheDrugClub steps in to help. Our prescription savings membership program is designed to make vital medications more affordable for individuals and families.
