About Endocarditis (HACEK)
HACEK endocarditis is a serious bacterial infection affecting the heart's inner lining and valves, requiring prompt and often long-term treatment. The medications needed can be costly, but managing this condition shouldn't be a financial burden. TheDrugClub helps members significantly reduce the cost of essential prescriptions, making vital care more accessible.
HACEK endocarditis refers to an infection of the heart's inner lining (endocardium) and valves caused by a specific group of fastidious bacteria: *Haemophilus*, *Aggregatibacter*, *Cardiobacterium*, *Eikenella*, and *Kingella*. While these bacteria are often found naturally in the mouth and upper respiratory tract, they can enter the bloodstream, especially after dental procedures or in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions, leading to this severe infection.
Symptoms of HACEK endocarditis can be subtle and develop slowly, including fever, fatigue, chills, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss. More serious signs may include a new or changing heart murmur, shortness of breath, and swelling. If left untreated, this infection can cause significant damage to heart valves, lead to heart failure, or spread to other parts of the body, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial.
Treatment for HACEK endocarditis typically involves a prolonged course of intravenous (IV) antibiotics, often lasting 4 to 6 weeks. Common antibiotics used include ceftriaxone, ampicillin, or ciprofloxacin, depending on the specific bacterial strain and its susceptibility. In some cases, if the heart valves are severely damaged or the infection doesn't respond to antibiotics, surgical intervention may be necessary to repair or replace the affected valves. The long duration and specific nature of these medications can lead to substantial prescription costs, posing a challenge for many patients.
