What Are Environmental Allergies in Dogs?

Symptoms typically appear between 1 and 3 years of age, often worsening with each passing year. Common signs include intense itching (pruritus), especially around the paws, face, ears, armpits, and groin. This scratching and licking can lead to secondary skin infections, hair loss, redness, thickened skin, and recurrent ear infections.
Common Treatments and Medications
Diagnosing environmental allergies usually involves a trip to the vet, who may recommend allergy testing (blood tests or intradermal skin tests) to identify specific triggers. Treatment is often lifelong and focuses on managing symptoms and reducing exposure to allergens. Common approaches include:
- Antihistamines: While sometimes helpful for mild cases, they are often less effective in dogs than in humans.
- Corticosteroids: These powerful anti-inflammatory drugs provide quick relief but are typically reserved for short-term use due to potential side effects.
- Immunomodulatory Drugs: Medications like Apoquel (oclacitinib) and Cytopoint (lokivetmab injection) are highly effective at targeting the itch and inflammation associated with allergies with fewer side effects than steroids.
