Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a type of myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN), a group of blood cancers that start in the bone marrow. In ET, the bone marrow overproduces megakaryocytes, the cells that make platelets, leading to an abnormally high platelet count in the blood. While often slow-progressing and sometimes asymptomatic for years, ET can increase the risk of serious complications like blood clots (thrombosis) or, less commonly, bleeding. Fatigue, headaches, and a burning sensation in the hands and feet are also common symptoms.
Diagnosis typically involves a complete blood count (CBC) showing elevated platelets, followed by bone marrow biopsy and genetic testing for mutations such as JAK2, CALR, or MPL, which are frequently associated with ET.
