Flat Feet (Pes Planus) Medications, Costs & Savings

Pharmacist insight

Bisphosphonates for osteoporosis must be taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water, and patients should remain upright for 30 minutes afterward. This prevents esophageal irritation. Generic alendronate is equally effective as brand-name Fosamax for preventing fractures.

About Flat Feet (Pes Planus)

Flat feet, medically known as pes planus, is a common foot condition characterized by the collapse of the arch of the foot, causing the entire sole of the foot to come into contact with the ground when standing. This can occur in one or both feet and may be present from birth or develop later in life due to various factors such as injury, aging, obesity, or underlying medical conditions like diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis.

What are the Symptoms of Flat Feet?

While some people with flat feet experience no symptoms, others can suffer from significant discomfort. Common signs include pain in the arch, heel, ankle, or lower leg, especially after physical activity. Swelling along the inside of the ankle, stiffness, and difficulty standing or walking for extended periods are also frequently reported. If left unaddressed, flat feet can sometimes contribute to problems in the knees, hips, and lower back due to altered gait mechanics.

Common Treatments and Medications

Treatment for flat feet typically begins with conservative methods. Orthotic devices, whether custom-made or over-the-counter, are often prescribed to support the arch and provide stability. Supportive footwear, physical therapy exercises (to strengthen foot muscles and improve flexibility), and rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) can also offer relief.

For managing pain and inflammation, medications play a crucial role. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen are frequently recommended to reduce discomfort and swelling. In some cases, topical pain relief creams or gels may also be used. For severe, persistent cases that don't respond to conservative measures, surgical intervention might be considered to reconstruct the arch or address underlying issues, but this is less common. Your doctor will determine the best course of action based on your specific condition.
