About Fuchs Dystrophy
Fuchs Dystrophy is an inherited eye condition that slowly damages the cornea, leading to blurry vision and discomfort. While there's no cure, various treatments can manage symptoms and restore sight. TheDrugClub is dedicated to making necessary medications and post-operative prescriptions more affordable for our members, helping you prioritize your eye health without financial worry.
Fuchs Dystrophy is a progressive eye disorder affecting the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped front surface of your eye. Specifically, it impacts the endothelial cells, which are responsible for pumping fluid out of the cornea, keeping it clear. In Fuchs Dystrophy, these cells gradually die off, leading to fluid buildup (edema) in the cornea. This swelling causes vision to become hazy or blurry, especially in the mornings, and can lead to glare, light sensitivity, and eye discomfort. Over time, the corneal swelling can worsen, making vision persistently cloudy and potentially causing pain from blisters on the corneal surface.
Early stages of Fuchs Dystrophy might only require observation. As symptoms progress, common treatments include hypertonic saline eye drops or ointments, which help draw fluid out of the cornea, temporarily reducing swelling and improving vision. However, these are often palliative. For more advanced cases, surgical intervention is typically required. The most common procedures are Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK) or Descemet's Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK). These surgeries involve replacing only the diseased inner layer of the cornea with healthy donor tissue, offering a faster recovery and fewer complications than a full corneal transplant (penetrating keratoplasty), which is reserved for severe or complicated cases.
