About Gonococcal Urethritis

Gonococcal urethritis (GU) is a specific type of urethritis, an inflammation of the urethra, caused by the bacterium *Neisseria gonorrhoeae*. Often referred to simply as "gonorrhea" when it affects the urethra, it leads to uncomfortable symptoms. This sexually transmitted infection (STI) is highly contagious and spreads through unprotected sexual contact. If left untreated, GU can lead to serious health complications, including infertility in both men and women, and can spread to other parts of the body.

Symptoms of GU typically appear within a few days to a week after exposure, though some individuals may be asymptomatic, especially women. In men, common symptoms include a painful or burning sensation during urination
