About Hepatitis D

Hepatitis D, or HDV, is a severe viral liver infection that only affects individuals already carrying the Hepatitis B virus. It can lead to rapid liver damage, cirrhosis, and cancer if left untreated. Navigating the long-term treatment can be costly, but TheDrugClub offers a simple way for members to save significantly on essential prescription medications.

Hepatitis D (HDV) is considered the most severe form of viral hepatitis. Unlike other forms of hepatitis, HDV is unique because it's a 'defective' virus; it cannot replicate on its own and requires the presence of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) to survive and spread. This means you can only get Hepatitis D if you are already infected with Hepatitis B.

HDV can occur in two ways: as a co-infection, where you get HBV and HDV at the same time, or as a superinfection, where you already have chronic HBV and then acquire HDV. Superinfection typically leads to more severe liver disease, accelerating progression to cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer. The virus is transmitted through contact with infected blood or other bodily fluids, similar to Hepatitis B.

Diagnosis involves specific blood tests to detect HDV antibodies and viral RNA. Symptoms often mirror those of Hepatitis B but can be more severe, including fatigue, nausea, dark urine, and jaundice. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent serious complications.

Treatment and Medications

The primary treatment for Hepatitis D has historically been pegylated interferon alpha (PEG-IFNα), often administered for at least 12 months, or even longer. This medication aims to suppress the virus and reduce liver inflammation. More recently, new therapies are emerging. Bulevirtide, for instance, is an innovative medication that blocks the entry of the virus into liver cells, offering a more targeted approach. These treatments are often vital and can be very expensive, creating a financial burden for many patients.
