About Hereditary Angioedema (Type III - Estrogen)

Hereditary Angioedema Type III (HAE Type III) is a distinct and rare form of hereditary angioedema, a genetic disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of severe swelling. Unlike HAE Type I and II, which involve a deficiency or dysfunction of the C1-esterase inhibitor (C1-INH) protein, individuals with HAE Type III typically have normal levels and function of C1-INH. Instead, this type is strongly associated with mutations in the F12 gene, which codes for coagulation factor XII, and its symptoms are frequently exacerbated by or directly linked to estrogen.

Primarily affecting women, HAE Type III episodes can be triggered or worsened by hormonal changes, such as those occurring during pregnancy, with the use of oral contraceptives, or during hormone replacement therapy. Symptoms include sudden, unpredictable swelling of the skin, respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal organs. Swelling can affect the face, lips, tongue, hands, feet, and genitals. Abdominal swelling can cause severe pain, nausea, and vomiting. The most dangerous aspect is laryngeal (throat) swelling,
