About IgG4-Related Sclerosing Cholangitis

IgG4-related sclerosing cholangitis (IgG4-SC) is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the bile ducts, potentially leading to blockages and liver damage. It's part of a broader group of IgG4-related diseases. Managing this condition often involves long-term medication. TheDrugClub helps members significantly reduce the cost of these essential prescriptions, making consistent treatment more accessible.

IgG4-related sclerosing cholangitis (IgG4-SC) is a distinct type of chronic inflammation characterized by an infiltration of IgG4-positive plasma cells, primarily affecting the bile ducts. This inflammation can cause the bile ducts to narrow, stiffen, and become obstructed, leading to impaired bile flow and, if left untreated, potential liver damage, cirrhosis, and even liver failure. While the bile ducts are most commonly affected, IgG4-SC is often part of a systemic condition known as IgG4-related disease, which can also impact other organs like the pancreas, kidneys, and salivary glands.

Symptoms of IgG4-SC can be varied and often mimic other liver or pancreatic conditions, making diagnosis challenging. Patients might experience jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or itching. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of imaging studies (such as MRI or CT scans), blood tests to check for elevated IgG4 levels, and often a biopsy of the affected tissue to confirm the characteristic immune cell infiltration.

Treatment for IgG4-SC primarily focuses on reducing inflammation and preventing further damage. Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, are often the first-line therapy, proving highly effective in inducing remission for many patients. However, long-term steroid use can have side effects, leading to the use of steroid-sparing agents like azathioprine or mycophenolate mofetil for maintenance therapy. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) may also be prescribed to improve bile flow. In cases of severe bile duct obstruction, endoscopic procedures like stenting
