About ITP Steroids
What is Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP)?
Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP), sometimes referred to as Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, is an autoimmune disorder characterized by a low number of platelets in the blood. Platelets are tiny blood cells that help your blood clot. When your platelet count is too low, you're at a higher risk of bruising, bleeding, and, in severe cases, dangerous internal hemorrhages. The 'immune' part signifies that your own immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys these crucial platelets. Symptoms can range from easy bruising and tiny red spots on the skin (petechiae) to nosebleeds, gum bleeding, and excessive bleeding from cuts.
