About Krabbe Disease

Krabbe disease is a rare, severe neurological disorder that damages the protective myelin sheath around nerve cells. Its progressive nature often requires ongoing, specialized care and costly medications. TheDrugClub understands the financial strain this can place on families. Our prescription savings membership helps individuals and families afford the vital treatments needed to manage Krabbe disease, ensuring access to necessary care.

Krabbe disease, also known as globoid cell leukodystrophy, is a devastating inherited disorder that primarily affects the nervous system. It's caused by a deficiency of an enzyme called galactocerebrosidase (GALC), which is crucial for breaking down certain fats. Without enough GALC, toxic substances build up in the body, particularly in the brain, leading to the destruction of myelin – the fatty insulation that protects nerve fibers. This damage impairs nerve function, causing a range of severe neurological symptoms.

The disease manifests in different forms, with infantile Krabbe disease being the most common and severe, typically appearing before six months of age. Symptoms often include extreme irritability, feeding difficulties, muscle weakness, developmental regression, and eventual loss of vision, hearing, and motor skills. Late-onset forms are rarer and progress more slowly. Diagnosis usually involves enzyme activity tests and genetic testing.
