About Primary Biliary Cholangitis, the broader condition

This overview covers Primary Biliary Cholangitis in general, not Primary Biliary Cholangitis (Incomplete Response) specifically.

Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic, progressive autoimmune liver disease that slowly damages the bile ducts. While there's no cure, effective treatments can manage symptoms and slow its progression.

### Understanding Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC)

Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic liver condition where the small bile ducts within the liver become inflamed and are slowly destroyed. These bile ducts are crucial for transporting bile, a digestive fluid, from the liver to the small intestine. When they are damaged, bile builds up in the liver, leading to inflammation, scarring (fibrosis), and eventually, cirrhosis – severe scarring that impairs liver function. PBC is an autoimmune disease, meaning the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells.

Symptoms often develop gradually and can include debilitating fatigue, intensely itchy skin (pruritus), dry eyes and mouth. As the disease progresses, some individuals may experience jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), fluid retention, and bone problems. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests, particularly for antimitochondrial antibodies (AMAs), and sometimes a liver biopsy to assess the extent of damage.

While there is currently no cure for PBC, treatments aim to slow the disease's progression, manage symptoms, and improve quality of life. It's usually taken long-term, often for life.

In advanced stages, a liver transplant may be necessary.
