About Progressive Fibrosing ILD

Progressive fibrosing interstitial lung disease (PF-ILD) is a serious condition characterized by irreversible scarring of the lungs, leading to worsening function over time. Managing its progression often requires specialized, costly medications. TheDrugClub helps members afford these vital treatments, ensuring you can focus on your health without the added burden of high prescription costs.

Progressive fibrosing interstitial lung disease (PF-ILD) refers to a group of lung conditions where scarring (fibrosis) in the lungs steadily worsens, regardless of the underlying cause. This persistent scarring makes it harder for the lungs to function, leading to symptoms like shortness of breath, a persistent cough, and fatigue. While various conditions can lead to PF-ILD – including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), some autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, or chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis – the shared characteristic is the progressive nature of the fibrosis.

Diagnosis typically involves a combination of high-resolution CT scans, lung function tests, and sometimes a lung biopsy. Early diagnosis is important to begin treatment aimed at slowing the disease's progression.

Treating Progressive Fibrosing ILD

The primary goal of treatment for PF-ILD is to slow the rate of lung function decline and manage symptoms. A key class of medications used are antifibrotic drugs. These include medications like pirfenidone (often known by the brand name Esbriet) and nintedanib (known as Ofev). These medications work by targeting pathways involved in lung scarring, helping to preserve lung function for longer. Depending on the underlying cause, other treatments such as immunosuppressants or oxygen therapy may also be prescribed. Pulmonary rehabilitation can also be a valuable part of managing symptoms and improving quality of life.
