About Sickle Cell Trait
Sickle cell trait occurs when someone inherits one sickle cell gene from one parent and one normal gene from the other. Unlike sickle cell disease, where two sickle genes are inherited, individuals with SCT typically don't experience the severe, chronic symptoms. Their red blood cells are usually normal, but under specific stress conditions – like extreme dehydration, high altitude, or intense physical exertion – some red blood cells can temporarily sickle. While most people with SCT live healthy lives without issues, there's a small risk of complications such as blood in the urine, kidney problems, or, rarely, splenic infarction during extreme conditions. It's also crucial for individuals with SCT to be aware of their carrier status for family planning, as they can pass the gene to their children
