About SSc Pulmonary Hypertension
SSc Pulmonary Hypertension (SSc PH) is a serious complication of scleroderma, causing high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. This chronic condition leads to symptoms like shortness of breath and fatigue, often requiring expensive, ongoing treatment. TheDrugClub helps patients manage these costs, making vital medications more accessible and affordable.
Systemic Sclerosis-associated Pulmonary Hypertension, or SSc PH, is a severe and often debilitating complication of systemic sclerosis (scleroderma). Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack the body's own tissues, leading to hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissues. When it affects the lungs, specifically the small arteries, it can lead to pulmonary hypertension.
In SSc PH, these tiny blood vessels in the lungs narrow and thicken, making it much harder for blood to flow through them. This increased resistance causes blood pressure within the pulmonary arteries to rise, placing significant strain on the right side of the heart. Over time, this strain can weaken the heart, leading to heart failure. Common symptoms include progressive shortness of breath, especially during exertion, fatigue, chest pain, dizziness, and swelling in the ankles and legs. Diagnosing SSc PH typically involves a combination of tests, including an echocardiogram and a right heart catheterization, which directly measures the pressure in the pulmonary arteries.
While there is currently no cure for SSc PH, various treatments aim to manage symptoms, improve quality of life, and slow the progression of the disease. Medications primarily work by dilating the blood vessels in the lungs, reducing pressure, and helping the heart function more efficiently. These often include specific classes of drugs such as Endothelin Receptor Antagonists (e.g., bosentan, macitentan), Phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) Inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil, tadalafil), and Prostanoids (e.g
