About SSTI (Staphylococcal - MSSA)

Staphylococcal Methicillin-Sensitive Staphylococcus Aureus (MSSA) Skin and Soft Tissue Infections (SSTIs) are common bacterial conditions causing redness, pain, and swelling. While treatable, the cost of necessary medications can be a barrier. TheDrugClub helps make these vital treatments more affordable, ensuring you can access the care you need without financial strain, providing significant savings on your prescriptions.

What is a Staphylococcal MSSA Skin and Soft Tissue Infection (SSTI)?

Skin and Soft Tissue Infections (SSTIs) are a broad category of infections affecting the skin and underlying soft tissues. When these infections are caused by a type of bacteria called *Staphylococcus aureus* that is susceptible to common antibiotics like methicillin, they are referred to as Methicillin-Sensitive Staphylococcus Aureus (MSSA) SSTIs. Unlike its more resistant counterpart, MRSA, MSSA is generally easier to treat with standard antibiotics.

These infections can range from mild, like impetigo or folliculitis (infected hair follicles), to more severe conditions such as cellulitis (a spreading skin infection) or abscesses (collections of pus). Common symptoms include redness, swelling, warmth, pain, and sometimes pus formation. They often occur when the bacteria enter the skin through a cut, scrape, insect bite, or surgical wound. While often localized, severe cases can sometimes lead to broader health issues if left untreated.

Common Treatments and Medications

The primary treatment for MSSA SSTIs involves antibiotics. The specific medication and duration will depend on the infection's severity, location, and your individual health. Oral antibiotics are frequently prescribed for mild to moderate infections and may include drugs like cephalexin, dicloxacillin, clindamycin, or doxycycline. For more severe infections, or if oral antibiotics aren't effective, intravenous (IV) antibiotics might be necessary. In cases of abscesses, a healthcare provider may also need to drain the pus to aid healing.

It's crucial to complete the entire course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if your symptoms improve quickly. Stopping early can lead to the infection returning or developing antibiotic resistance.
