About Supraventricular Tachycardia in Children
A rapid heartbeat in a child can be alarming for any parent. When this rapid heartbeat originates from the upper chambers of the heart, it's often diagnosed as Supraventricular Tachycardia, or SVT. This condition is one of the most common types of arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) in children.
What is Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT)?
SVT occurs when the heart's electrical system malfunctions, causing the heart to beat much faster than normal. In children, this is often due to an extra electrical pathway or an abnormal electrical circuit present from birth. Episodes can start and stop suddenly. While SVT is typically not life-threatening, prolonged or frequent episodes can cause symptoms like palpitations (a feeling of a racing heart), dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue, or chest pain. Infants might show signs like poor feeding, irritability, or sweating. Diagnosis usually involves an electrocardiogram (ECG) to record the heart's electrical activity
