About TTP Rituximab
Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) is a rare, life-threatening blood disorder characterized by the formation of tiny blood clots throughout the body. These clots can lead to a dangerously low platelet count (thrombocytopenia), the destruction of red blood cells (hemolytic anemia), and damage to vital organs such as the kidneys, brain, and heart. TTP is typically caused by a deficiency or dysfunction of an enzyme called ADAMTS13, which is essential for regulating blood clotting.
Common Treatments and Medications for TTP
Treating TTP requires prompt and often intensive medical intervention. The cornerstone of acute TTP treatment is plasma exchange (plasmapheresis), a procedure that removes harmful antibodies from the blood and replaces them with healthy plasma. This is frequently combined with corticosteroids, such as prednisone, to suppress the immune system.
For patients with refractory TTP (those who don't respond well to initial treatment) or relapsing TTP, medications like Rituximab play a crucial role. Rituximab is a monoclonal antibody that targets B-cells, which are thought to produce the antibodies that attack ADAMTS13. By reducing these B-cells, Rituximab can help restore ADAMTS13 activity and prevent further clot formation. Other newer treatments, such as caplacizumab, may also
