About Ventricular Septal Defect
A Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) is a common congenital heart condition where a 'hole' exists between the heart's lower chambers. While some VSDs close naturally, others require monitoring or treatment, often involving medications. TheDrugClub is dedicated to easing the financial burden of these essential prescriptions, helping families access affordable care.
What is a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)?
A Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) is a type of congenital heart defect, meaning it's present at birth. It's essentially a hole in the septum, the wall that separates the heart's two lower pumping chambers (ventricles). This opening allows oxygen-rich blood from the left ventricle to mix with oxygen-poor blood from the right ventricle. When this happens, extra blood is pumped to the lungs, forcing the heart and lungs to work harder.
VSDs can vary greatly in size, from tiny openings that may cause no symptoms and close on their own, to large defects that can lead to significant health problems if left untreated. Symptoms, when present, can include rapid breathing, poor feeding and weight gain in infants, and a heart murmur detected by a doctor
