About Very Low Birth Weight

Very low birth weight (VLBW) refers to babies born weighing less than 3 pounds, 5 ounces. This condition often requires intensive medical care and a range of specialized medications, leading to significant costs for families. TheDrugClub helps ease this burden by providing substantial savings on necessary prescriptions, ensuring your little one gets the care they need without added financial strain.

A baby is considered to have very low birth weight (VLBW) if they weigh less than 1,500 grams (approximately 3 pounds, 5 ounces) at birth. This condition is most often a result of premature birth, meaning the baby was born before 37 weeks of gestation. Other factors contributing to VLBW can include intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), where the baby doesn't grow well in the womb, or multiple births like twins or triplets.

Babies born with VLBW face unique challenges and are at higher risk for various health issues. These can include breathing problems due to underdeveloped lungs, feeding difficulties, an increased susceptibility to infections, vision or hearing problems, and potential developmental delays. Their tiny bodies are fragile and require highly specialized medical attention.

Common Treatments and Medications

Care for VLBW infants typically begins in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Here, they receive constant monitoring and support. Treatments often involve:

  • Breathing Support: Many VLBW babies need help breathing, ranging from supplemental oxygen to mechanical ventilation. Medications like surfactant are given to help mature their lungs.
  • Feeding Support: Due to underdeveloped sucking and swallowing reflexes, babies may receive nutrients intravenously or through a feeding tube. Special high-calorie formulas or fortified breast milk are often used.
  • Temperature Regulation: Incubators are crucial for maintaining a stable body temperature.
  • Infection Prevention: VLBW babies have immature immune systems, making them vulnerable to infections
