About Benralizumab

Benralizumab, known by its brand name Fasenra, is an advanced biologic medication used to treat severe eosinophilic asthma. If you or a loved one relies on this crucial treatment, understanding its role and potential costs is vital. TheDrugClub is dedicated to helping our members navigate prescription expenses, offering ways to save on essential medications like benralizumab.

Understanding Benralizumab: A Targeted Approach to Severe Asthma

Benralizumab is a targeted therapy approved for adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older as an add-on maintenance treatment for severe eosinophilic asthma. This specific type of asthma is characterized by an elevated level of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, in the blood and airways, which contributes significantly to inflammation and asthma exacerbations. Benralizumab is not intended for the treatment of acute bronchospasm or status asthmaticus.

How Benralizumab Works to Control Your Asthma

Benralizumab is a monoclonal antibody that works by targeting the interleukin-5 receptor alpha (IL-5Rα) subunit found on the surface of eosinophils. By binding to this receptor, benralizumab initiates a process called antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity, which leads to the rapid and nearly complete depletion of eosinophils in the blood and airways. Reducing these inflammatory cells helps to decrease the frequency of asthma attacks, improve lung function, and potentially lower the need for oral corticosteroid medication. It's a precise approach designed to address the underlying cause of inflammation in severe eosinophilic asthma.

Typical Costs of Benralizumab

As a specialized biologic medication, benralizumab typically carries a significant cost. The list price for biologic drugs can be substantial, and the final price you pay can vary widely depending on your insurance coverage, the specific pharmacy you use, and your geographic location. Without insurance, the cost of benralizumab can be very high, making it a financial challenge for many patients. Even with insurance, co-pays and deductibles can accumulate, impacting your out-of-pocket expenses.
