About Dapagliflozin (HF)
Dapagliflozin hf is a vital medication used to manage certain types of heart failure, helping to improve heart function and quality of life. Understanding your treatment options and associated costs is crucial. TheDrugClub is dedicated to helping members navigate prescription expenses, offering potential savings on medications like dapagliflozin hf to make your health journey more manageable.
Dapagliflozin, specifically its formulation for heart failure (dapagliflozin hf), represents a significant advancement in cardiovascular care. Originally known for its role in managing type 2 diabetes, dapagliflozin has demonstrated remarkable benefits in treating heart failure, particularly heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), and more recently, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) for certain patients.
What Dapagliflozin hf Treats
Dapagliflozin hf is primarily prescribed to improve outcomes for adults with heart failure. For those with HFrEF, it helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalizations for heart failure. Its benefits extend to improving symptoms and physical limitations associated with the condition. By addressing underlying mechanisms that contribute to heart failure progression, it offers a new pathway for patients to live healthier, more active lives.
How It Works
Dapagliflozin hf belongs to a class of drugs called SGLT2 inhibitors (sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors). It works by blocking the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys. This action leads to the kidneys removing more glucose (sugar) and sodium from the body through urine. While this is beneficial for blood sugar control in diabetes, its heart failure benefits are thought to stem from several mechanisms, including reducing fluid volume, improving cardiac energy metabolism, and decreasing inflammation and fibrosis in the heart. These combined effects help lighten the workload on the heart and protect kidney function, which is often intertwined with heart failure.

Warnings and precautions for Dapagliflozin (HF) (FDA label)
Diabetic Ketoacidosis in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and Other Ketoacidosis: Consider ketone monitoring in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and consider ketone monitoring in others at risk for ketoacidosis, as indicated. Assess for ketoacidosis regardless of presenting blood glucose levels and discontinue dapagliflozin if ketoacidosis is suspected. Monitor patients for resolution of ketoacidosis before restarting. ( 5.1 ) Volume depletion: Before initiating dapagliflozin, assess volume status and renal function in the elderly, patients with renal impairment or low systolic blood pressure, and in patients on diuretics. Monitor for signs and symptoms during therapy. ( 5.2 ) Genitourinary Infections, including Urosepsis, Pyelonephritis, Necrotizing Fasciitis of the Perineum (Fournier’s Gangrene), and Genital Mycotic Infections: Monitor patients for signs and symptoms of genitourinary infections and treat promptly, if indicated.

Drug interactions for Dapagliflozin (HF) (FDA label)
Table 4: Clinically Relevant Interactions with Dapagliflozin Insulin or Insulin Secretagogues Clinical Impact The risk of hypoglycemia may be increased when dapagliflozin is used concomitantly with insulin or insulin secretagogues (e.g., sulfonylurea) [see Warnings and Precautions ( 5.4 )] . Intervention Concomitant use may require lower doses of insulin or the insulin secretagogue to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia. Lithium Clinical Impact Concomitant use of an SGLT2 inhibitor with lithium may decrease serum lithium concentrations. Intervention Monitor serum lithium concentration more frequently during dapagliflozin initiation and dosage changes. Positive Urine Glucose Test Clinical Impact SGLT2 inhibitors increase urinary glucose excretion and will lead to positive urine glucose tests. Intervention Monitoring glycemic control with urine glucose tests is not recommended in patients taking SGLT2 inhibitors. Use alternative methods to monitor glycemic control.
