About Emtricitabine/Tenofovir
Emtricitabine tenofovir is a powerful combination medication primarily used in two critical areas: the treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV in individuals at high risk. It is also used as part of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) regimens after potential exposure to HIV.
What Emtricitabine Tenofovir Treats
When used for HIV treatment, emtricitabine tenofovir is typically prescribed as part of a multi-drug regimen to suppress the virus, reduce viral load, and improve the immune system's health. For PrEP, it’s taken daily by HIV-negative individuals to significantly lower their risk of acquiring HIV from sexual activity or injection drug use. This medication is a cornerstone in global efforts to control and prevent the spread of HIV.
How It Works
This medication combines two distinct antiviral drugs: emtricitabine and tenofovir. Both are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). They work by blocking an enzyme called reverse transcriptase, which HIV needs to replicate itself and spread within the body. By inhibiting this enzyme, emtricitabine tenofovir effectively reduces the amount of HIV in the blood, helping to protect the immune system or prevent the virus from establishing an infection in the first place.
Typical Costs of Emtricitabine Tenofovir
Without insurance or discount programs, the cost of emtricitabine tenofovir can be substantial. Brand-name versions
