About Flurbiprofen
What is Flurbiprofen and What Does It Treat?
Flurbiprofen is a potent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to manage a variety of pain and inflammatory conditions. It's often prescribed for the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, helping to reduce joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. Beyond chronic conditions, it can also be used for acute pain, such as that associated with menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea) or other musculoskeletal injuries like tendinitis or bursitis. An ophthalmic (eye drop) formulation of flurbiprofen is also available, specifically used to prevent miosis (pupil constriction) during certain eye surgeries, such as cataract extraction.
How Does Flurbiprofen Work?
Like other NSAIDs, flurbiprofen works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, which are natural substances in the body that play a key role in mediating pain, inflammation, and fever. By blocking the enzymes (cyclooxygenases, or COX-1 and COX-2) responsible for prostaglandin synthesis, flurbiprofen effectively reduces the inflammatory response, thereby alleviating pain and swelling. This mechanism of action makes it a valuable tool in managing conditions where inflammation is a primary component of discomfort.
Understanding Typical Costs
The cost of flurbiprofen can vary significantly depending on factors such as dosage, quantity, whether it's a generic or brand-name product, and the pharmacy you choose. Without insurance, a

Drug interactions for Flurbiprofen (FDA label)
See Table 1 for clinically significant drug interactions with flurbiprofen. Table 1: Clinically Significant Drug Interactions with Flurbiprofen Drugs That Interfere with Hemostasis Clinical Impact: Flurbiprofen and anticoagulants such as warfarin have a synergistic effect on bleeding. The concomitant use of flurbiprofen and anticoagulants have an increased risk of serious bleeding compared to the use of either drug alone. Serotonin release by platelets plays an important role in hemostasis. Case-control and cohort epidemiological studies showed that concomitant use of drugs that interfere with serotonin reuptake and an NSAID may potentiate the risk of bleeding more than an NSAID alone.
