About Letrozole
Letrozole is a crucial medication often prescribed for hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women and, in some cases, for infertility. Understanding its role and how to manage its cost is key. With TheDrugClub, you can access significant savings on letrozole, helping to make your essential treatments more affordable and accessible.
Letrozole is primarily known for its role in treating hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It's used both as an initial treatment and after other therapies to reduce the risk of recurrence. Beyond cancer, letrozole has also found utility in reproductive medicine, often prescribed off-label to induce ovulation in women experiencing infertility, particularly those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Its versatility makes it a valuable medication for several critical health conditions.
Letrozole belongs to a class of drugs called aromatase inhibitors. Its mechanism of action involves blocking the enzyme aromatase, which is responsible for converting androgens (male hormones) into estrogens (female hormones) in various tissues throughout the body, including fat, muscle, and breast tissue. By inhibiting aromatase, letrozole significantly lowers estrogen levels in the body. For hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer, this reduction in estrogen starves cancer cells that rely on estrogen to grow, thereby slowing or stopping their proliferation. In fertility treatment, by lowering estrogen, it can trick the body into producing more follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which stimulates ovulation.
The cost of letrozole can vary considerably. Factors influencing the price include whether you're prescribed the brand-name version (Femara®
