About Olmesartan
Olmesartan is a widely prescribed medication used to manage high blood pressure, a common condition that can lead to serious health issues if left untreated. By effectively lowering blood pressure, olmesartan helps protect your heart and overall well-being. At TheDrugClub, we believe essential medications like olmesartan should be accessible and affordable for everyone, helping you save significantly on your prescription costs.
What Olmesartan Treats
Olmesartan is primarily prescribed to treat high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. Hypertension is a widespread condition where the force of blood against your artery walls is consistently too high. Left untreated, it can lead to severe health problems such as heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and heart failure. By effectively lowering and maintaining healthy blood pressure levels, olmesartan plays a crucial role in preventing these serious complications and supporting long-term cardiovascular health.
How Olmesartan Works
Olmesartan belongs to a class of medications called Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs). Its mechanism of action involves blocking the effects of a natural substance in your body called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II normally causes blood vessels to narrow and constrict, which increases blood pressure. By blocking the receptors where angiotensin II binds, olmesartan allows blood vessels to relax and widen. This widening of blood vessels reduces the overall resistance to blood flow, thereby lowering blood pressure. This action helps your heart pump blood more easily throughout your body.
Typical Costs of Olmesartan
The cost of olmesartan can vary significantly depending on whether you purchase the brand-name version (Benicar) or its generic equivalent, your pharmacy, and your insurance coverage. Without insurance, a typical 30-day supply of generic olmesartan can range anywhere from $15 to $50 or more. Brand-name versions are considerably more expensive, often costing hundreds of dollars per month. Even with insurance, many patients face co-pays or deductibles that can make managing this essential medication a financial burden.

What Olmesartan is approved for (FDA label)
Olmesartan medoxomil tablets are indicated for the treatment of hypertension in adults and children six years of age and older, to lower blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events, primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions. These benefits have been seen in controlled trials of antihypertensive drugs from a wide variety of pharmacologic classes including the class to which this drug principally belongs. There are no controlled trials demonstrating risk reduction with olmesartan medoxomil. Control of high blood pressure should be part of comprehensive cardiovascular risk management, including, as appropriate, lipid control, diabetes management, antithrombotic therapy, smoking cessation, exercise, and limited sodium intake.
