About Palonosetron
Facing the challenging side effects of certain medical treatments, like chemotherapy, can be daunting. Palonosetron offers a powerful solution to combat severe nausea and vomiting, helping you maintain a better quality of life. At TheDrugClub, we believe essential medications should be accessible, and we're here to help our members find significant savings on prescriptions like palonosetron.
Palonosetron is a highly effective medication primarily used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting, particularly those induced by chemotherapy (CINV) and occurring after surgery (PONV). These conditions can be debilitating, often leading to dehydration, malnutrition, and a significant decrease in a patient's overall well-being. By proactively managing these side effects, palonosetron helps patients adhere to their treatment plans and recover more comfortably.
So, how does this powerful antiemetic work? Palonosetron belongs to a class of drugs known as 5-HT3 receptor antagonists. It functions by blocking the action of serotonin, a natural substance in the body that can trigger nausea and vomiting. Serotonin acts on specific receptors in the gastrointestinal tract and the brain's vomiting center. By binding to and blocking these 5-HT3 receptors, palonosetron effectively prevents serotonin from initiating the vomiting reflex, providing sustained relief for up to several days after a single dose.
When considering the typical costs, palonosetron is often a specialty medication, frequently administered intravenously in a clinical setting, though oral forms are also available. As a potent, often brand-name drug, its price without insurance or a robust discount program can be substantial. A single dose can range from several hundred to over a thousand dollars, depending on the dosage, formulation, and

What Palonosetron is approved for (FDA label)
Palonosetron hydrochloride injection is indicated in adults for prevention of: acute and delayed nausea and vomiting associated with initial and repeat courses of moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy (MEC). acute nausea and vomiting associated with initial and repeat courses highly emetogenic cancer chemotherapy (HEC). postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) for up to 24 hours following surgery. Efficacy beyond 24 hours has not been demonstrated. As with other antiemetics, routine prophylaxis is not recommended in patients in whom there is little expectation that nausea and/or vomiting will occur postoperatively. In patients where nausea and vomiting must be avoided during the postoperative period, palonosetron hydrochloride is recommended even where the incidence of postoperative nausea and/or vomiting is low.
